School Counseling Philosophy

   The Hillsborough Township Elementary School Counseling Program is a comprehensive, developmental approach designed to assist all students in reaching their maximum potential. This program is dedicated to helping students acquire the skills and knowledge which are essential for responsible behavior, academic achievement, personal satisfaction, and successful integration into society.

    According to The New Jersey Counseling Initiative, the Elementary School Counseling Program is an integral part of the educational curriculum and focuses on the development of the "Whole individual" becoming an "effective lifelong learner." The developmental objectives are proactive and are designed to prevent student "Issues" from escalating into "problems".

    This program focuses on all children by helping them acquire the necessary skills to be successful at each developmental stage of life. The activities of the program are designed to help all student achieve competence through interaction with the counselor and other students. The uniqueness of every individual is stressed throughout the program. Through classroom guidance activities, small group and individual counseling, the coordination of school and community resources, and consultation with students, staff and parents, the Elementary Counselor works to assist students in mastering personal, academic, and other life skills necessary and essential for developmental growth.

    The goal of the Elementary School Counseling Program is for all students to acquire the skills and knowledge which are essential for responsible behavior, academic achievement, personal satisfaction, and successful integration into society.
