Kindergarten News

Literacy ~

  • We are currently practicing the correct letter formation of our capital letters.  We are also learning how to tap out CVC words (i.e. pet, sat, mud etc.).  Please refer to your Fundations packet so you can practice this with your child.  This is an important reading skill that will enable your child to sound out an unknown word they may come across while reading.

  • We are learning how to “stretch” words out and write the letter sounds we hear in the word.  Have your child practice identifying the beginning, middle and ending sounds in words.  The middle sound will be the hardest as vowel sounds are very difficult to identify.

  • Words introduced so far - the, me, a, and, to, is, as, I, you, of, my, like, see, can, in

  • In writing, we are learning about story elements - beginning, middle, end, characters, setting, problems.  We are also learning how to add details to our stories.  We are learning the importance of spaces between our words.

  • We continue to practice rhyming words or words that are in the same word family.

  • Please note - if your child is struggling with proper letter formation, recognizing letter names or letter sounds please practice this daily.  Dry erase boards, shaving cream, markers, chalk are all fun things to use when practicing.

Math ~

  • We are continuing to practice counting by ones, fives, and tens.  Try counting by ones but starting at a number other than one (i.e. start at 15 and count by ones up to 25).

  • Practice recognizing and writing two digit numbers (numbers greater than 10).

  • We are learning how to draw pictures to help us solve number stories and some of us even know how to write the matching number sentence to go along with the number story!

  • We are measuring heights of students and objects in the room and comparing them.

  • We continue to practice graphing information and then reading the graph.

  • We learned the difference between 2-D and 3-D shapes and the names of different 3-D shapes.  You can go on a shapes walk around your house and identify these shapes!

  • Continue making numbers in different ways - tally marks, on a ten frame, picture, number sentence, on a dice (dot pattern).

Science/Social Studies~

  • Themes this month:  New Year’s, Snow/Winter, MLK, Fairy Tales.

  • In Science we are learning about the seasons and weather and how it determines the way we dress.  We learned about how the wind and clouds and temperature all play a part in determining the weather.  Some new words we learned about include precipitation, condensation, and evaporation.  We even learned about the water cycle!

Reminders/Upcoming events:

  • Feel free to go to RAZ kids to have your child practice reading.

  • Please have your child explore the everyday math website for fun games that reinforce many of our math skills.

  • Please remember that your child’s reading folder should be kept in their backpack containing their reading chart and any books they received from school that need to be returned.  We share these books with all the Kindergarten classes, T.P. and First grade classes.  Please teach your child to be responsible with these books.  Thanks for your help.

  • Valentines should not be addressed to individual students but just signed by your child.  This makes it easier for delivery!

  • The 100th Day of School is coming up soon - Feb. 13th provided we do not have any snow days before then.  A note will be coming home soon explaining the 100th day posters.

  • Feb. 20th - NO SCHOOL - Presidents Day
