Grades 6-8

Mathematics Curricula in Grades 6-8

Grade 6 Overview:

The grade 6 mathematics program emphasizes the following content clusters as they align with the grade six New Jersey Student Learning Standards adopted by the state: ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics and probability.  The content is presented using a problem solving approach designed to develop critical thinking skills within real world situations.   The NJSLS for Mathematical Practice:  make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; reason abstractly and quantitatively; construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others; model with mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically; attend to precision; look for and make use of structure; and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning are embedded in the daily teaching and learning.  Practice of basic skills is ongoing through a variety of routines and activities.  Topics are revisited regularly and practice is distributed over time to facilitate full concept development.  Activities explore a wide variety of content with opportunities for students to apply basic skills to geometry, fractions, decimals, percents, measurement, statistics, and algebra.  Program implementation and assessment offer enrichment and reinforcement based on individual student needs.  Successful completion of the sixth grade mathematics program prepares students for entry into the seventh grade mathematics program.

Grade 7 Overview:

The grade seven mathematics program emphasizes the following content strands as they align with the grade seven New Jersey Student Learning standards adopted by the state:  Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. The content is presented using a problem solving approach designed to develop critical thinking skills while embedding the mathematical processes into daily teaching and learning.  Practice of basic skills is ongoing through a variety of routines and activities. Topics are revisited regularly and practice is distributed over time to facilitate full concept development. Activities explore a wide variety of content with opportunities for students to apply basic fact skills to geometry, measurement, and algebra.  Program implementation and assessment offers enrichment and reinforcement based on individual student needs.  Successful completion of the seventh grade mathematics program prepares students for entry into either the eighth grade mathematics program or algebra 1.

Grade 8 Overview:

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a solid foundation in the concepts necessary for the building of mathematical understanding.  Students will be shown the essential components including, but not limited to, functions, linear representations, solving equations, order of operations, and factoring.  Students will learn how to recognize a pattern, describe a pattern and use a pattern to determine the next value.  In order to develop an understanding of the concepts being taught in this course, hands-on investigations and discovery activities will be used.  Graphing technology will help students to develop an understanding of the relationship between dependent and independent variables.  Those students enrolled in Math 8 should acquire the necessary skills to move on to algebra 1.   Successful completion of this course will provide students with the necessary concepts to further their mathematical studies.

Please Note:  Some students qualify to take algebra 1 in grade 7 or grade 8.  Those students who qualify to take algebra 1 in grade 7 will then take geometry in grade 8.   The Curriculum Maps for algebra 1 and geometry are housed on the grades 9 -12 page of the website. Further information about placement is located on the Placement Decisions page of the website.

All students are required to take algebra 1, geometry and algebra 2 during the regular school year with Hillsborough Township Public Schools as decided through placement criteria.
